Essential Oils vs Fragrance Oils: What's the Difference?

Essential Oils vs Fragrance Oils: What's the Difference?

When you pick up a bar of soap, the scent is often one of the first things you notice.

But have you ever wondered what creates that fragrance?

Essential oils and fragrance oils are both used to scent soaps, skincare and candles, but they're very different things.

At Kleensoaps, we choose pure essential oils for our soaps. Here's why.

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are concentrated aromatic extracts obtained from plants. Depending on the plant, they can be distilled from flowers, leaves, roots, bark, seeds or peel. Think lavender, peppermint, rosemary, eucalyptus or sweet orange.

The extraction process captures naturally occurring aromatic compounds from the plant, creating the distinctive scent associated with it. Essential oils are highly concentrated, so only small amounts are needed to give a soap its natural wonderful fragrance.

What are fragrance oils?

Fragrance oils are blends created to produce a particular scent. Some fragrance oils contain synthetic aromatic compounds, while others may contain a combination of synthetic and naturally derived ingredients.

They are widely used because they are cheap, and can create an enormous range of scents - from familiar florals and fruits to more complex fragrances that don't naturally occur in a single plant.

Why does Kleensoaps use essential oils?

For us, it's about keeping our recipes as close to nature as possible.

We love the individuality of essential oils. Lavender smells like lavender. Sweet orange smells like sweet orange. Each botanical brings its own character to a bar of soap, and each plant has its own beneficial properties that sink into your skin.

Because essential oils come directly from plants, they fit naturally with our approach to making simple, thoughtfully made soap. For this reason, we refuse to use cheap synthetic fragrances in our soaps. Instead, we use pure essential oils to create subtle, botanical scents that complement the natural character of each bar.

We believe that thoughtfully chosen plant-based ingredients are a better way to care for your skin than unnecessary synthetic fragrance. That's why we use pure essential oils to scent our soaps.

Why does natural soap smell different?

If you're used to conventional shower gels and soaps, you may notice that natural soap has a softer, more subtle scent. That's intentional. Without synthetic fragrance designed to create a strong, lingering perfume, essential-oil scented soap can feel more delicate and botanical.

A more thoughtful approach to fragrance

We believe that everyday products don't need to be overloaded with scent to feel luxurious. Our soaps are made with carefully selected plant oils, butters and pure essential oils, creating a sensory experience that's natural, considered and uncomplicated.

No synthetic fragrances. No unnecessary extras. Just beautifully made soap with the natural character of the botanicals we choose.
